Drugs in the Tour de France (TDF)? EPO undetectable!
Interesting study recently published in the Journal Of Applied Physiology (Lundby C, et al) shows that one of two labs accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) could not detect significant levels of injected EPO in a group of volunteer (positive) samples. 8 volunteers were injected every second day for 14 days (a common ‘boosting period’) and then 2 weekly injections (‘maintenance’ period). The doping ‘treatment’ increased oxygen carrying capacity and improved exercise endurance (as EPO is supposed to do), but only one of the two labs could detect this. the second lab returned ‘negative’ samples for both phases of ‘doping’ samples.
I guess no real surprise there?! You still have to admire TDF riders, and love the Tour as one of the greatest sporting events globally!
